Earth Observation is becoming an increasingly important tool in many areas of our society – on local, regional and global levels. The coming weeks several important meetings will take place enlightening and strengthening this activity both in political and practical terms. Earth Observation is composed of numerous elements and it is impossible to cover them all. What I will do these coming couple of weeks is to write articles highlighting contributions to Earth Observation that will not be so evident in the standard news coverage we expect will take place in connection with the GEO Ministerial, UN Climate Change Conference and The Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. To give you a clue, it will be about the foundations of global earth observations – describing the equivalent of the electrical network that provides us with electricity in our homes or the sources of the milk we drink – the cows! Stay tuned and learn about an unknown foundation of your daily lives. |

I have the best of memories from my many journeys with train. My latest experiences are from the highest and fastest railways in the world. The Qinghai-Tibet railway on the Tibetan plateau and the extremely high-speed Shanghai maglev from Shanghai to Pudong Airport are both recent achievements by the worlds fastest growing economy - China. China is building a national infrastructure with a speed and capacity never seen before. Infrastructure is a valuable asset contributing to a country's national economy. In the case of China the national infrastrucure is also of outmost global importance. I take a look at how China combine their transportation infrastructure with an Earth observation infrastructure that is being immensly improved in China these days; the GPS system. |

No, Ocean United is not a football team. It is a group of professionals leading international efforts to improve our understanding and management of the Ocean. Oh, how boring you'd think if you thought this was about football. Well, think again. The Ocean and it's implications on your life is way bigger than football! Water is essential to all life on Earth.
This last week in November, Ministers from more than 70 countries meet in Cape Town, South Africa, to discuss how we can build a global earth observing system including the oceans. More than two third of our planet Earth is covered by oceans. Thus, Ocean United has put together an information package explaining in more detail why the ocean is so important to us and how we observe the ocean today. I'll let you in on a few secrets about measuring sea level that you will not find in this package. |
