Halloween Colors

Halloween treeThis years fall foliage has been incredible. To celebrate Halloween I post a few of the pictures I've taken in Åsa where I live.

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).

The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. LeavesOn the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter. (From History.com )

Biospheric Impressions
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 25 September 2008

hepatica nobilisSeasonal changes in the biosphere are easy to observe. We all do it with various enthusiasm and intensity. Even completely urbanized human beings can't help noticing that the parks changes character according to seasons. Those of us living close to nature are embedded in the biosphere in a way that forces us to notice. We are all subject to biospheric impressions.

In fact, biospheric impression is just a fancy name on the appreciation of plants like noticing the first leaves in spring, smelling and picking flowers, gathering berries and enjoying a spectacular fall foliage.

I passionately gather biospheric impressions – I chase and collect them systematically and have developed certain rituals over the years. Obviously, discovering the first spring flowers is a major event as is finding wild strawberries.

I have made a collection of the 2008 biospheric impressions from Åsa. You can learn about the biosphere in Åsa, obviously, and I'll reveal my compulsive biospheric traditions, some of them bordering on fanaticism (which is growing very popular these days...).

Miniature Cryosphere
Written by Bente Lilja Bye

kurThis is a silly little story about an ultra miniature cryosphere. It is about the cryospheric changes on Haakenrud road, a private road situated close to Oslo, Norway. I live here and any changes of this miniature cryosphere has consequences for my daily life. This is the story about an environmental protection program that demolished a well functioning local cryosphere.
